Vikki Quill

With a background in dance and movement studies, Vikki Quill went to Japan in 1979 looking for alternatives to western contemporary dance practice. For the next eleven years, Vikki practised body movement with Noguchi Michizo, professor emeritus of the Tokyo Fine Arts University. Noguchi's interest in the relationship between the moving body and the development of Chinese characters led to Vikki studying under the calligrapher Kato Koho and his group Kikkokai, The Oracle Bone Writing Association.

Vikki practised with Kikkokai for five years, exhibiting with them annually at Ueno's Mori Bijutsukan. Works in private collections include Gyokusenji and Kozenji zen temples in Yamagata and Rei Kawakubo, designer for Commes des Garcons. The exploration into language, the moving body and visual expression has continued back in Sydney, Australia. Exhibitions include The Performance Space, Uchi Lounge, The Japan Cultural Centre, an Australian/ Chinese joint exhibition in Singapore and the Blake Exhibition for Religious Art.
