Rosalind
Crisp
Rosalind¹s work has been presented in galleries and theatres
in Australia since 1987, in Japan and Korea since 1998 and in
Europe since 2000. She established the Omeo Dance Studio in
Sydney in 1996. The studio has developed into a major focus
for contemporary choreographic research and improvisation in
Sydney. She has been awarded a Women and Arts Fellowship, an
Australian award for best female Dance Performer of the year
and a 2-year Choreographic Fellowship from the Dance Board of
the Australia Council. In
2001 Rosalind went to Europe with her ensemble for a 2 month
residency at Monty Antwerp, afterwards touring traffic to
the Centre National de la Danse Paris, Tanzfabrik Berlin and
Les Plateaux of La Biennale nationale de danse du Val-de-Marne
Paris. She was subsequently commissioned by the director of
the Biennale, Michel Caserta to create her solo, raft and
quartet tread. Raft was presented as a work-in-progress at
Tanzfabrik Berlin as part of artsaustraliaberlin02 and selected
as one of four Australian companies¹ work for the 2002
Novembre Australien festival in Paris. Tread was developed
through a residency at Tanzfabrik and Theater am Halleschen
Ufer, Berlin, with a combination of Australian and German
artists and premiered in the 12th Biennale du Val-de-Marne,
March 2003. Raft and tread played in Omeo Dance¹s berlinXchange
program at Performance Space, Sydney, May 2003. Rosalind is
currently working between Sydney, Paris and Berlin.
Proximity
was developed over a two month period flollowing earlier contact
and exchanges. I was invited to create the work with the dancers
of keiko Takeya's Contemporary Dance Co. Originally the work
was made with 5 dancers and later adapted for touring with
2. The process was extremely challenging, particularly the
confrontation of cultural values in relation to artistic decision-making.
What to us was frustrating diplomacy, to the Japanese was
essential conduct. The work resulted in more of a parallel
presentation of difference rather than an exchange or integration.
