Philip Brophy

Philip Brophy’s first visit to Japan was in 1983 to Toho studios, home of Godzilla. Rather than explore the ‘real’ Japan, Brophy has mostly been interested in Japan’s more artificial surfaces. This interest has manifested itself through a variety of ventures based on an attraction to the mutated difference that lies at the heart of Japanese culture. KABOOM! – a major exhibition on post-war animation from American and Japan – exemplified this. Curated by Brophy and held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in 1994, this exhibition cited Japanese animation at the forefront of the field. Brophy has also curated programmes for the Melbourne International Film Festival on Osamu Tezuka (1995), Studio Ghibli (1997) and Seijun Suzuki (2000). Apart from numerous published articles on Japanese cinema, soundtracks and music internationally, Brophy is also a film director, composer and sound designer. His current work in development is THE SOUND OF MILK.
