Nolan
Paul Nolan was born in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. Initially he
studied Art at The National Art School in Newcastle. Holding a view that Australia
is a "part of Asia" together with a long held fascination for Far Eastern Art,
he was drawn to Japan, where he first studied Suiboku - ga ( water - ink - pictures
) under Matsumoto Hozan Sensei, a master with lineage to the Chinese Sung Painters.
At that time seeing the works of Ono Chikkyo and other Nihonga painters moved
him to seek to study Nihonga*
In 1982, he entered the Japanese National
University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo as a Monbusho Scholar, gaining a Masters
degree in Nihonga in 1986. Since Returning to Australia, Nolan remains committed
to the methods and ideals of the Nihonga tradition regularly exhibiting Nihonga
work drawn from experiences in Japan, Australia and other parts of Asia.
