Paul Nolan Paul Nolan was born in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. Initially he studied Art at The National Art School in Newcastle. Holding a view that Australia is a "part of Asia" together with a long held fascination for Far Eastern Art, he was drawn to Japan, where he first studied Suiboku - ga ( water - ink - pictures ) under Matsumoto Hozan Sensei, a master with lineage to the Chinese Sung Painters. At that time seeing the works of Ono Chikkyo and other Nihonga painters moved him to seek to study Nihonga* In 1982, he entered the Japanese National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo as a Monbusho Scholar, gaining a Masters degree in Nihonga in 1986.
