Mutsuko Bonnardeaux

Born in Tokyo, studied in London, worked for JAL in Paris and Sabena in Brussels. After marrying, I followed my husband in 9 different countries, in Europe, Asia and Africa, never settling more than 2 years in the same country.

We eventually landed in Kununurra, a remote town, 4300 km North of Perth, in Western Australia, with a population of 3,000. I was only the Japanese and felt isolated. However the scenery, the light, and the skies were amazing. The beauty of the bush compensated for the lack of sophistication in the town. I felt inspired by the environment and full of energy. Working with Japanese papers and applying Japanese techniques to capture my impressions in a way others could understand and appreciate, made isolation comfortable.

We ended staying a record 10 years in Kununurra, then moved to Geraldton and eventually to Perth in 2003. Influenced by the city environment, my work, is slowly changing.
