Michael Cohen (Kantanka)

Michael Cohen is currently co-Artistic Director with Theatre Kantanka, Sydney. While living in Japan in the early 1990s, Michael trained with the Suzuki Company of Toga and numerous butoh companies (Dairakudakan, Hakutoboh, Dance Butter Tokio). Since that time, Michael has worked extensively with his solo show Emu Performance in festivals and events in Japan and has been a multi-award winner at the Shizuoka International Festival. During this time Michael met and worked with a number of artists including Yumi Umiumare and Shigeyuki Ueno who have since worked collaborated on projects with Theatre Kantanka.
Kantanka is a company that produces theatre productions for sites not traditionally used for theatre. The company works with artists from diverse backgrounds and produces highly visual and physical theatre based in classic texts. In 1996, Kantanka produced "AveAves" (with music by Satsuki Odamura); in 1998, "Waters of Brightness" was performed at the Chinese Garden; in 2000, "The Eye" toured to the Telstra Adelaide Festival and in 2002, "Inanna's Descent" was performed at the Masonic Centre, Sydney.
