Maria
Adriana Verdaasdonk
Maria Adriana Verdaasdonk, originally of Melbourne, is a Theatre Studies
and Visual Arts & Design graduate who based herself in Tokyo in the early 90's
to study aikido and butoh. Working intensively with Akiko Motofuji at Asbestos-kan
Studio, she also attended workshops at Kazuo Ohno's studio, participating in several
performance projects under the direction of Ohno's son, Yoshito Ohno.
After collaborating with the experimental Theater Group Tao, she went on to co-found
multimedia performance unit 66b/cell in 1994 with her partner and visual artist,
Tetsutoshi Tavata. While this performance and media art collective regularly tour
internationally, projects such as The Melbourne Fringe Fashion Awards 2000 link
up event with Co:exist Studio, Tokyo, and the online project, The Australia-Japan
New Media Gallery, produced in association with The Australian Embassy Tokyo in
2001, have fostered deeper connections between Australia and Japan.
In
1996, she received the Royal Society of the Arts Encouragement Award for visual
research on the Japanese art concept of "ma", a theme that continues to inspire
her and underlines much of her work. http://www.vision.co.jp/cell
